Porn is here to stay. The moralizing righteous are still quite vocal about it, using many powerful adjectives to fill you with guilt and shame, and unfortunately, they’re here to stay too. The media is quick though to latch on to outspoken moralists and expose their sexual escapades – I’m always smugly satisfied when a chaste evangelist or politician is embroiled in some dodgy sex scandal, but not because I like to see a hypocrite go down, even if deserved, but because it reaffirms we all have a sexual side and that guilt-tripping eventually comes back to bite you. But what these errant crusaders confirm is that sexuality and porn is an inherent part of us; you don’t have to flaunt it, but you need to accept it.

Porn Is Not The Enemy

Porn has changed the way we express ourselves sexually. It’s introduced ideas and stimuli we could never have conceived on our own. Porn has become so readily accessible for free that it’s a part of our cultural identity. Whether they admit it or not, most people we know (particularly guys!) are looking at porn at least occasionally. Porn will always be openly condemned in most societies, but behind closed doors when the computer gets turned on, it’s convenient to cast morals aside. The problem with all this moralizing is that viewing porn makes us feel guilty, and that all tends to surface after watching it. All the moralizing around the degenerative aspect of porn plays in our heads, reinforcing some negative self-talk. But we’re not bad people. We’re just human, with the same sexual desires as other humans. It’s normal, and it’s healthy.

The Difference Between Sex and Porn When Using Weed

Like anything though, porn can become an addiction, and that’s when it becomes unhealthy. When combining porn and weed addiction, you have two regular activities which not only eat into your productive time, but as one study found, it can involve switching between each activity for hours on end. A study in The Journal of Sexual Medicine found marijuana use increased sexual frequency, which is good if you’re in a relationship or using dating apps, as there’s also a healthy exchange of social intercourse before moving on to the sexual variety, whereas marijuana and porn encourages loneliness by avoiding human contact.

The Physical and Mental Similarities Between Weed and Porn

There are three different types of weed and porn addiction; people who do each activity separately, those who do both together, and those with feet in both camps. Over 75% of males masturbate while watching porn, and similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in weed, masturbation and THC both induce vasodilation – a widening of the blood vessels. But aside from the physical similarities, weed and porn produce the psychological effect of making you feel better usually in a private setting. Furthermore, a recent study found porn and weed stimulate the brain in a similar way. The privacy of these activities gives way to a more negative feeling of loneliness with marijuana and porn.

Make A Shift From Addiction to Less Use

There’s no magic pill to stop weed and porn addiction. You are the magic pill, meaning you create your own magic. Not exactly what you want to hear, right? But without realizing it, you created a system of addiction, therefore you must create a system to get out of it. That means you have to do the work yourself. But first, adjust your thinking towards weed and porn. Giving up weed needs to be a permanent result eventually, but the porn part simply needs to shift from addiction, ie, too much, to a lot less. The reason for this is simple – sexuality will always be a part of you, and there will be times in life where you’re single and will want to watch porn. That’s OK. The first step is to accept that you can use porn without seeing it as a negative. Then you can start to ween yourself from using it as much.

How To Stop Your Weed and Porn Addiction

Separating porn from weed will take some dedication. Try a technique called habit stacking with weed. Habit stacking was coined by James Clear and involves taking an existing habit and adding another. Currently, you have a bad habit of smoking weed stacked with another bad habit of watching porn. Separate the two and add a different habit for each. The habit you add needs to be positive so it can counter the negative habit. That habit needs to be either something you used to like doing, or a new habit where you create something from nothing. Creating something from nothing means the act of transforming your thoughts and actions into something other people can see – writing, painting, origami, etc. When it comes to habit stacking with weed for example, smoke weed and then do some photography, and then post it on Instagram or some other platform. It’s critical you share the results of this second habit because even if the activity is not particularly social, the act of sharing it is. This is important because it breaks the toxic aspect of isolation with weed and porn addiction.

Habit Stacking And Porn

Habit stacking with porn is a bit tougher because there’s an expectation to “finish”, and that can take a while. There are two options here; either set a time limit to start the second habit whether you’ve finished or not, or regardless of how much time it took, ALWAYS commence the second habit immediately afterwards. This could be a similar habit to those suggested previously, or you could write a porn review.

Write What You Know – Write About Porn

Writing a porn review might seem a bizarre habit to create, but the aim is to intellectualize the porn process for you. By reflecting and writing a review about a porn film, sequence, actor, niche, etc, it starts to alter the concept of porn from something simply to get off on, to something with depth. In other words, porn starts to have more than one function for you, and this dilutes the addictive aspect. Writing a review is time consuming and can be a chore. But stick with it, because if you commit to this habit, you’ll have to plan your porn viewing sessions – the 7am fap before work leaves no time to write a review afterwards. Here are some links to movie review writing, and porn review writing. Make sure you post your review somewhere public where it can be read – you don’t have to be a good writer, but it needs to be seen so that you can give yourself a pat on the back for your effort, and can add value for other people. If you’re making a conscious decision to not indulge in a porn session because you don’t have time to complete the second habit, then you’re building a mental toughness which is breaking down your porn addiction.

Be The Magic Pill

Overcoming a weed and porn addiction is tough because you have to do the work. A lot of work. That work is time consuming and no matter how much enjoyment you try to infuse into the process, it’s still work. It can be repetitious and, in the beginning, can feel pointless. But each second habit breaks down the first. You are the pill for your habits. Now go and create some magic.
