So, you’ve given up cannabis or your thinking about it and I get asked all the time how am I going to get high without smoking weed. And other questions like these:

  • What do I do when I feel bored?
  • How will I sleep at night?
  • Can I replace the high?
  • What will I do in the evenings?
  • What if I just wanna smoke?

Well, the answers are quite easy. Remember when you were a kid? You were happy at times then before the weed took over. You can be happy again.

Here are some ideas of things you can do to replace the all-too-easy answer of smoking a joint when you haven’t got anything better to do.

1. Hook up with an old friend

Have you lost touch with someone you really loved from yesteryear? I’m sure they’d appreciate a call. You don’t need to go round and see them. Just say you wondered how they’re getting along. (Make sure this is a straight friend, not a smoker for now.)

2. Treat yourself

You give up weed. Congratulations, I hardly need to tell you how much money you’re saving. So, spend a little of it. Buy a ridiculously expensive item from a shop next time, like a premium brand coffee, soap, cologne, etc., something you wouldn’t ordinarily buy. Or treat yourself another way.

3. Smile

Smile to yourself.

4. Change your posture

Sit differently in your chair now. Go on, try it!

5. Go for a run

I know I bang on about this one. But the chemicals released after exercise make you feel ten times better than any drug and they don’t give you any side-effects. However, you may feel a little stiff the next morning!

6. Ask questions about your questions

When you’re getting frustrated and angry it’s probably because you are losing an argument with reality. So if you think some group of people at work are stressing you out, go into that thought in greater detail.

  • Who are they?
  • Are they really stressing me?
  • Are they stressing themselves?
  • Are they stressing each other?
  • Are they all stressing me equally or are some worse than others?
  • OK are some of them not really purposely stressing me at all?
  • What is stress?
  • How does it feel when I’m stressed?
  • Whose fault is it?
  • Can I live with it?

You will find your negative thoughts are just open loops of generalisations that should be ignored as you have better things to do.

7. Exercise your brain

The brain is like a muscle that needs to be kept in shape. I’m not asking you to go back to school here. That clearly wouldn’t get you high. But you could research some fascinating subject on the internet, like the mind-numbing hugeness of the universe. That’ll get you going!

8. Breathe

Stop, relax and be aware of your breathing from the stomach.

9. Let go of things from the past

Still thinking of that time those boys beat you up years ago? Me, too. But don’t! It didn’t happen in a very real sense because the physical wounds have healed and keeping the mental ones hurting makes as much sense as the beating did. Your memory is unreliable, don’t feed it with brain time. Concentrate on the present moment. The present moment is good.

10. Say this to yourself

Everyday in every way I’m getting better and better. Say it! It’s true. Say this to yourself everyday, it works, funnily enough!

11.Stop dreaming/fear about the future

You’re forgetting the present. The present’s good.

12. People watching

Sit in a cafe behind the window or on a bench in a public place and watch the people go by. Look for the kindness in their faces. You’ll be amazed that the world is actually full of beautiful, kind people!
